December 2009 Newsletter 18 Jan 10

December 2009 Dear Wonderful Friends of Homes of Hope What an amazing, busy and eventful year it has been at Homes of Hope! During 2009 we have had the privilege of providing both long term and medium term care aged between 3 and 12 years of age, averaging 10 children at any given time. These children have continued to stabilize and thrive with many excelling in the many activities in which they participate, such as netball, rugby, soccer, Number and Word Works and school. We have had new children come to us and some existing children being reunited with their family and/or extended Whanau. It is a true blessing to be able to provide love, stability and healing for these precious precious children. In April 2009 due to the recession, we were forced to make the decision to decommission one of our Homes. This home has been used by For The Sake of Our Children Trust to advance their work developing young community leaders. We are looking forward to re-commissioning this home in the New Year. In October we opened our 4th home in Waitakere Auckland where we are able to care for 6 children at a time. We have named the home Whare Awhi. The amazing Louise Stodart is Auckland’s General Manager and the driving force behind Homes of Hope Waitakere. Craig and Angela Walden, our House Parents for 15 months in Tauranga, have taken up this position in Waitakere commencing 20th December. We continue to have a wonderful, dedicated team working both in our homes and within Administration, and continue to give thanks for each and everyone. In the homes - House Mum Perry has recently celebrated 5 years or service. Our support staff Tom, Natalia and Ben and Eileen work throughout the week to support the House Parents and often are found to be working in a voluntary capacity. We are delighted to welcome Dean and Jeanette Davis who join the team in time for Christmas and bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience of working with children. We are so grateful to the many Volunteer Caregivers who care for our children for respite weekends in their homes and to the many many generous people who help with gardening, cooking, cleaning, groceries etc. Thank you to each and every one of you. In particular, Angela Wallace and Steve Ellingford who have just completed four years of mentoring and care support for two gorgeous boys who have returned home to live with their Auntie. Ange and Steve epitomize our vision and mission, giving of themselves tirelessly, unselfishly and advocating strongly on behalf of the children. That’s what it’s all about! Well done team!! Thank you one and all! This is truly the village raising the children. We have cared for 47 tamariki so far – what a privilege! What a blessing! Building the next generation together! Looking ahead we are we are aiming to open in Rotorua in 2010, where a real need for our service has been identified. We will keep you inform with the progress of this. We have also been invited to consider 4 homes in Hamilton ideally suited to meeting the needs there. None of this would be possible without the financial support for our donors and there are many to thank! Firstly to those who give faithfully and regularly by way of Automatic Payments. It is this giving that not only gives us some certainty and stability, but much needed encouragement. So thank you for the HUGE difference you are making. We’d like to thank the following Grant/Trust Organisation’s who have provided grants to fund projects or costs: J R McKenzie Trust, Trillian Trust, Lion Foundation, Sky City Community Trust, First Sovereign, Cue Sports Foundation, Perry Foundation, Southern Trust, The Acorn Foundation, Bay Trust, Zespri, BP, NZ Community Trust, Pub Charity, Community Post. Additionally I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Stewart Trust for granting us $400,000.00 to contribute towards the mortgage of our largest home. We are so incredibly thankful for this Grant as this will ensure the on going long term ability of Homes of Hope to provide our care for our wonderful children. To all of you throughout the year who have kindly donated clothing, furnishings, gifts, and outings for the children, your time, regular donations, and one off donations, prayers, blessings plus much much more - we truly would not be here without you. You enable us to continue to do what we are called to!! Please accept my heartfelt appreciation for all that you do!!! “There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no more duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace” Kofi Annan On behalf of the precious darling children and our wonderful team we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May you truly know the blessings of joy, peace and hope that our Saviour King brings!Meri Kirihimete kia tupato me rua mano tekau. Arohanui to you all Warmly, Arohanui, Hilary Price CEO/Founding Trustee
